ChatGPT Codex is OpenAI's official agentic coding tool that reads your repository, writes and edits code, runs tests, and proposes changes — all from a dedicated desktop app. If you're running a Windows VPS or a local Windows 11 machine, you can install the Codex desktop app directly from the Microsoft Store in just a few minutes. This guide walks you through the full process.
ChatGPT Codex for Windows
Download the official Codex desktop app from OpenAI via the Microsoft Store or the Codex website.
Download from Official Website →Step 1: Check the System Requirements
Before installing Codex, make sure your Windows 11 machine meets the basics:
- Windows 11 (64-bit)
- A ChatGPT account — Plus, Pro, Team, or Enterprise subscription is required for full Codex access
- An active internet connection
- Microsoft Store access (enabled by default on Windows 11)
Codex runs tasks in its own sandboxed cloud environment, so it does not require a high-end local machine to function.
Step 2: Open the Microsoft Store
The easiest and most reliable way to install Codex on Windows 11 is through the Microsoft Store. Open it by pressing:
Windows key + S
Then type:
Microsoft Store
Click on the result to open it. Alternatively, you can find the Microsoft Store icon pinned to your taskbar by default.
Step 3: Search for Codex
Inside the Microsoft Store, click the search bar at the top and type:
Codex
Look for the app published by OpenAI with the name Codex. Click on it to open the app listing.
You can also go directly to the listing using this link: Codex on Microsoft Store.
Step 4: Install the App
On the Codex app page, click:
Get
If prompted to sign in to your Microsoft account, do so to proceed. Windows will download and install Codex automatically. The app is free to install — your OpenAI subscription controls what features you can access inside it.
Once the download finishes, the button will change to:
Open
Step 5: Launch Codex and Sign In
Click Open to launch the Codex desktop app for the first time. You can also find it in your Start menu by searching for:
Codex
On the welcome screen, click:
Sign in with ChatGPT
This will open a browser window where you can log in with your OpenAI account credentials. Once authenticated, you'll be redirected back to the app automatically.
Step 6: Connect a Repository and Start a Task
After signing in, Codex will prompt you to select a project. Click:
New Project
You can connect a GitHub repository or point Codex to a local folder on your machine. Once a project is loaded, type a task in natural language — for example:
Fix the failing unit tests in the auth module
Codex will spin up an isolated environment, load your repository, and begin working on the task. Each task runs in its own thread so you can run multiple agents in parallel without conflicts.
Step 7: Review and Merge Changes
When Codex finishes a task, it presents a diff of all changes made. You can review the changes directly inside the app, leave comments on specific lines, and choose to:
Apply changes
or open the diff in your preferred code editor before merging. Nothing is applied to your codebase until you explicitly approve it.
