What your IP address does and does not reveal
A public IP address identifies the connection, not the person. It is assigned by your internet provider and is what every server you talk to sees as the source of your traffic. Most home connections get a dynamic address that changes periodically, so the number here may differ tomorrow.
It reveals roughly where you are — usually the country and often the city-level region of your provider — along with who your provider is. It does not reveal your name, your exact address, or what you do online. If you are behind a VPN, a proxy or a company network, the address shown belongs to that intermediary.
A VPS is the usual way to get an address you control: a dedicated IP that stays the same, is not shared with a neighbourhood of other subscribers, and sits in whichever country you pick.

- Why does my IP address change?
- Most consumer connections use dynamic addressing: the provider leases an address for a period and may hand you a different one after a reconnection or router restart. If you need an address that never changes — for a whitelist, a mail server or a remote desktop — you need a static IP, which is what a VPS gives you.
- What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
- IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.42 and there are not enough of them left, so providers increasingly share them between customers. IPv6 addresses are much longer, written in hexadecimal, and are plentiful enough for every device to have its own. Many connections have both, and which one you see here depends on which your browser used.
- Can someone find my home address from my IP?
- No. Public geolocation of an IP resolves to your provider, so it typically lands on a city or region — often the wrong one, sometimes hundreds of kilometres away. Only your provider can tie an address to a subscriber, and normally only under a legal request.
- How do I hide or change my IP address?
- Route your traffic through something else: a VPN, a proxy, or your own server. Running the tunnel on a VPS you control means the exit address is yours alone rather than one shared by thousands of users of a commercial VPN, and you choose the country it sits in.
