Visual Studio Code (VS Code) is a free code editor developed by Microsoft. It is popular among developers because it is lightweight, easy to use, and supports programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. If you are new to programming, installing VS Code is a great first step.

Step 1: Visit the Official VS Code Website

First, open your web browser and visit the official Visual Studio Code website. Downloading the installer from the official source helps you avoid modified or unsafe installation files.

Start-Process "https://code.visualstudio.com/Download"

Step 2: Download VS Code for Windows

On the download page, choose the Windows installer that matches your computer. For most users, the User Installer is the recommended option because it installs VS Code for the current Windows account without requiring administrator permissions. After the download finishes, open your Downloads folder and locate the VS Code installer file.

Start-Process "$env:USERPROFILE\Downloads"

Step 3: Run the VS Code Installer

Double-click the downloaded .exe file to start the installation. If Windows displays a security prompt, verify that the installer came from the official VS Code website.Select the installer from the results and run it.

Get-ChildItem "$env:USERPROFILE\Downloads" -Filter "*VSCode*.exe"

Step 4: Accept the License Agreement

Read the license agreement and select the option to accept it if you agree with the terms. Click Next to continue.Follow the installer prompts to proceed with the setup.

Get-Process -Name "Code" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue

Step 5: Choose the Installation Location

The installer normally selects a suitable default folder. For a standard user installation, VS Code is commonly installed under your Windows user profile.Keep the default location unless you have a specific reason to change it.

Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\Microsoft VS Code"

Step 6: Select Additional Tasks

During installation, review the available options. Enabling Add to PATH lets you launch VS Code from PowerShell or Command Prompt. You can also enable options for adding “Open with Code” to the Windows Explorer context menu.Select the options you need, then continue with the installation.

$env:Path -split ';' | Select-String "Microsoft VS Code"

Step 7: Complete the Installation

Click Install and wait for the installer to finish copying the required files. When the process is complete, select the option to launch Visual Studio Code if it is displayed. If you selected a different installation location, use that folder's path instead.

Start-Process "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\Microsoft VS Code\Code.exe"

Step 8: Open Visual Studio Code

Once installed, you can launch VS Code from the Windows Start menu. Search for “Visual Studio Code” and select the application. This command works when the VS Code command-line executable has been added to your PATH. If it does not work, open VS Code from the Start menu first.

Start-Process "code"

Step 9: Create Your First Project Folder

Before writing code, create a folder to keep your project files organized. For example, you can create a folder named MyProject inside your Documents directory. In VS Code, select File → Open Folder and choose the folder you created.

New-Item -ItemType Directory -Path "$env:USERPROFILE\Documents\MyProject" -Force

Step 10: Open Your Project in VS Code

You can also open your project directly from PowerShell after the code command is available. The project folder should appear in the VS Code Explorer panel. You can now create files and start programming.

cd "$env:USERPROFILE\Documents\MyProject"
code .

Step 11: Install Your First Extension

VS Code supports extensions that add language support, debugging tools, formatting, and other features. For example, if you plan to learn Python, install the official Python extension from Microsoft.Run this command after VS Code has been installed and its command-line tool is available.

code --install-extension ms-python.python

Step 12: Verify the Installation

Finally, check that VS Code is installed and that the command-line tool works correctly. If the command displays version information, you are ready to start using VS Code from the terminal.

code --version
