Android Studio provides the tools needed to develop Android applications on Windows. Installation includes the desktop application and the Android SDK components required for development.
Start by checking your computer’s compatibility, then download the Windows installer and complete the setup wizard.
Step 1: Check the System Requirements
Android Studio requires at least 8 GB of RAM, or 16 GB when used with the Android Emulator. Check your Windows version, processor, and available storage against the official system requirements.
Open Command Prompt and check your Windows version:
winver
To view your computer’s hardware and memory information, run:
systeminfo
Step 2: Download Android Studio for Windows
Open the official Android Studio download page and select the recommended Windows .exe installer.
Review the download terms, accept them if you agree, and wait for the download to finish.
Step 3: Run the Android Studio Installer
Open your Downloads folder and double-click the downloaded installer. The filename varies by release.
You can open Downloads from Command Prompt:
explorer "%USERPROFILE%\Downloads"
When the installation wizard opens, click Next to continue.
Step 4: Choose the Installation Components
Keep the recommended components selected. If an Android Virtual Device option appears, leave it selected if you plan to use the emulator.
Choose an installation folder or keep the default location:
C:\Program Files\Android\Android Studio
Follow the remaining prompts, click Install, and wait for the files to finish copying.
Step 5: Launch Android Studio
Click Finish and launch Android Studio from the Windows Start menu. If prompted to import settings, continue without importing for a fresh installation or select your existing configuration.
Step 6: Complete the Setup Wizard
Follow the Setup Wizard and keep the recommended settings unless you need a custom configuration.
Review the SDK component licenses and accept them if you agree. Keep your internet connection active while Android Studio downloads and installs the required components.
Click Finish when setup completes. The Android Studio welcome screen confirms that the initial installation is complete.
